Different Paths, One Goal – The Role of Silsila in Tasawwuf

Lecture No. 26

Hazrat Zain-ul-abideen حفظه الله
Khanqah Rehmkaria Imdadia - H# CB 1991/1 Near Masjid Ameer Hamza RA, Street 4, Allah Abad, Westridge 3, Rawalpindi

Key Lessons in this Session:

  • Sufi Orders & Spiritual Chains (Silsila): Their role in preserving the blessings of companionship from the Prophet ﷺ through Sahaba, Tabi‘een, and later generations.
    • Different Methodologies, One Objective: Chishti focus on removing bad traits first, Naqshbandi focus on cultivating good traits, while Qadri and Suhrawardi have distinct approaches — all aiming at purification of the soul.
      • Respect Across Paths: While every seeker must regard their own Shaykh as best for them, Tasawwuf forbids criticizing other Shaykhs or spiritual orders.
        • Analogy with Medicine: Just like allopathy, homeopathy, or Unani aim at physical health, different Sufi orders employ varying methods for the same purpose — spiritual healing.
          • Naqshbandi Distinction: Early introduction of Jazb (spiritual attraction) to awaken love for Allah, but only after foundations of Tawbah (repentance) and Inabat (turning to Allah) are established.
            • Stages of the Path: From repentance and commitment to Shariah, through spiritual exercises (riyazat, mujahadat), to higher stations like Taqwa, Sabr, Tawakkul, Taslim, and Rida.
