The Rights of the Shaykh and the Nature of the Shaykh–Murid Relationship

Lecture No. 24 - Based on the translation of the book "Fahm al-Tasawwuf" by Hazrat Shaykh Syed Shabbir Ahmad Kakakhel (db).

Hazrat Zain-ul-abideen حفظه الله
Khanqah Rehmkaria Imdadia - H# CB 1991/1 Near Masjid Ameer Hamza RA, Street 4, Allah Abad, Westridge 3, Rawalpindi

In this lecture, Hazrat explained the essential rights of the Shaykh (spiritual guide) and the responsibilities of the Murid (disciple) after pledging allegiance (Bay‘ah).

  • A disciple must firmly believe that their spiritual progress depends on their own Shaykh and avoid seeking guidance here and there.
    • Love and respect for the Shaykh accelerate spiritual growth, while obedience to his instructions ensures progress.
      • Optional practices and personal initiatives must be subject to the Shaykh’s approval, as he knows what is best for each disciple.
        • The Shaykh–Murid bond resembles that of a doctor and patient: medicine (obligations), nourishment (recommended practices), and restrictions (prohibited actions) must all be followed sincerely.
          • The essence of this relationship can be summarized in four principles: Inform, Follow, Believe, and Submit.
            • The true benefit lies not in the Shaykh’s fame, but in the disciple’s sincerity, connection, and obedience. Even less-renowned Shaykhs carry blessings through their spiritual lineage (silsila).
              • Just like an electric bulb shines according to its own capacity, a disciple benefits from the Shaykh in proportion to their sincerity and readiness.

Key lesson: Spiritual progress depends less on the renown of the Shaykh and more on the disciple’s sincerity, communication, and steadfast following.
